About a year ago, I became a member of a website called "www.garageband.com" a place where unsigned artists post their music to be reviewed by other musicians and writers, all with the hopes of winning a recording contract at the end. (yeah right!) I've posted 3 songs (as of now) at this site, and the reviews have been pretty interesting, and I thought you might enjoy reading them here!
SONG LIST:
NEPOTISM
SENSE OF HUMOUR
THIS STARTED OUT A LOVE SONG
Song #1:
Nepotism (off Pop Nightmare Phase One!)
Dark melodies with evangelical
lyrics:
I can't give
an honest commentary to what sounds like ELO mixed with Christian Music
Beautiful
Melody and Somber Song Catch the Listener's Attention:
Interesting Smashing Pumpkins tone throughout the song (sorry if you don't like
the band). However at points it becomes more beautiful than a Pumpkins song.
Nice falsetto at the end of the verse too. Background vocals throughout the song
add a great texture, and the effects on the rhythm guitar are perfectly done -
not too heavy. Now that I think of it, there could be some Duncan Shiek
influence here - sorry again if you don't like him. Very cool song overall that
gets better and better the more you listen to it (I listened to it twice)!
Hard
to classify:
This song is very hard to classify, but it reaches right into my head and makes
me want to turn all the lights down, light some candles, and reflect inwardly
while waiting for something to begin.
Mellow
rock with flavor:
Overall pretty good... I think conga might have sounded good (but then again I
love percussion)!
Channeling
Emotion through Music:
I love the guitar in this song. It invokes such a dark atmosphere. The way the
music changes from dark to light is like a roller-coaster of emotions going up
and down. This song is very unique and different. My only comment is to really
build it as you reach the end, more power, more aggression.
Thank
You:
I feel like I've had to wade waste deep in bad punk and metal for ages but
finally some sweet pop.....nice guitars and vocals...keep it up!
creepy......
The verses have an eerie feel to them, and I don't like that, but maybe others
do, I dunno.
simplicity:
This song is awesome. I like the changes, the melody, and the pure simplicity of
the track, along with the guitar, which is playing some of the coolest riffs
ever.
Slow...
too slow...
While this song wasn't bad, it did not fit my tastes at all... I thought your
vocalist was talented, but if anyone else in the band is talented, it didn't
show. The song wasn't flashy, it didn't do anything unique. It actually seemed
fairly generic to me. I suggest you add some sort of hook or something. Make it
more interesting.
come
into 2001!
really dated- vocals are warbled- did you record it in a bathroom?
(I'd like to
thank WESSY from Toronto for that last supportive review!)
Song #2: Sense
Of Humour (from Songs Everyone Will Hate)
Your Search For Originality
Stops Here...
Very Cool Tune.....Very
Original..Keep rocking man
Cacophony:
While this song keeps things lively, it was a bit too cacophonous for me. The
background refrain also becomes irritating very quickly.
does
anyone really call this music if so why am I wasting my time?
this is not music this is noise.
Back
to the jungle!
I dig the vocal percussion in the verse. This along with the unusual harmonies
makes an interesting rock track. The beginning made me insecure whether this was
a joke or not, but as soon as the vocals emerged in the groove I knew this was
class!
god,
shut it off!!
dude, definitely the most annoying song iIve heard on garageband.com. forget
about that record contract.
(See, I told
you this was Songs Everyone Would Hate!!
DUDE.... WHERE'S MY CONTRACT?!!)
write
more songs:
your music kicks ass. Send me a free copy by mail @ 642 55th ave. lot a norwalk...
fun
change in tempo:
What a FUN song. I love your creation! The change in Tempo was perfectly tuned.
siamese
twins that don't get along:
The lyrics and the instrumentals were not well integrated.
Crazy
Tasty Psychedelia!
Really original quirky power pop- kind of psychedelic, very intricate. They
remind me of this AMAZING bay area Psych band from the late 80's called The
Ophelias- you guys should check them out You'll like it. Their guitar player
plays with the Counting Crows now (Dave Immergluck)
the
drummer's awesome:
the singing could be a little better, but your drummer just kicks ass. Don't
ever replace him!
(Knowing
what you all know about me, you HAVE to admit, that last one is pretty darn
funny!)
Busy!
This song is WAY too busy. The background effects are too loud and very
distracting. Lose some of the extras and go with the song!
bizarre
this is really strange. but it's in a good way. if you're going to be punk, this
is the way to do it. makes me think of early cbgb's style where everybody
actually sounded different. keep going
Contrast
sums it up
Great tune. I especially like the tribal chant underneath the silky female
vocal. Good contrast of sounds. I'd like to here more lead vocal. And the drums
seem overpowering at times. Otherwise this song kicks.
(FEMALE
VOCAL! Gees... I cut my hair and everything, and people still think I'm a
girl. Maybe I should get my breasts reduced?!!)
Very
Cool:
I thought that your song was VERY original, and I liked the part where the
vocals are over another voice saying something that sounded like, "Bar-huda,
Bar-huda." I thought that you could improve the song by clarifying the
vocals, maybe also turn them up more.
Song #3: This
Started Out A Love Song (from Songs Everyone Will Hate)
Bitter?
Nice melody.... but
lyrically...eek! - bitter, perhaps?
Powerpop
rules!
Oh yeah, the best opening line I've heard in years! Cool song. This is just
about the coolest tune I've heard here. Great chord progression. I only wish
there was a bit heavier guitar tone in the chorus! This is awesome! The heavier
bit makes up for it, but I did get a little tired of the leslie sound on the
guitar. Cool ending too!
Not
easy listened, but easy consumed:
Sounds very good, Reminds me a bit of Jellyfish. Very well played, the sound
atmosphere is huge.
Ben
Folds w/ Guitar
Sounds like Ben Folds Five got a guitarist---I like it, freaky chords and the
cool changes.
nice
melodic changes:
Cool, I like how the melody and chord progression goes from the pre-chorus into
the chorus.
Well... it appears clear that Sense Of Humour is the song to Hate this month! Maybe you'll hate it too... who knows?
