• How To Order The Album
For a long time, I've been playing little gigs on the side in pubs and musical clubs to make extra money. For most of the 1990's I did this with my partner and friend Andrew Horrocks, under the name Tanner/Horrocks.
In the early 90's, we weren't generating enough income from live gigs with
One Hundred Days, so Andy and I thought we'd give it a shot playing in local clubs playing cover songs. It turned out to be a very good thing for us.Spending years singing and playing together helped develop
the vocal blend that was a signature to the One Hundred Days sound.
Before this, most of the harmony parts on a recording were done only by me. As we got more tight as a unit, Andy began singing a lot more in the band, and the two of us loved harmonizing with each other. After One Hundred Days hung up the skates in 1999, Andy decided to
put all of his effort into running his recording studio,
A.M.E. Recording Studio. This left me with the decision of whether I had it in me to continue playing gigs on my own.
In April of 99', Andy and I played our last gig together.
(Not that we won't ever play together again, but as of now, that was our last gig).In July, I got up the courage (and about 150 new songs!) to go out and try playing some gigs on my own.
I came to a realization that I NEEDED to play music.
Andy loves working with artists and bands in his studio, creating
amazing sounding albums. Although I enjoy this process as well,
I have a real need to get out and play music, almost anywhere.I made the decision to keep playing on my own, at least once in awhile.
I play on average, two times per month, so at least I get to keep playing.
Ironically... I make more money on my own, but that's not the point!
So... many people have asked me what kinds of songs I play at these gigs,
so I started recording them, and from those recordings, I decided to put out a little album as sort of a representation of a typical, informal gig with me.
Hope you enjoy what you hear.
The Ian Tanner Pop Nightmare was ill-conceived by Ian Tanner in January/February of 2000. These ill-conceived performances were recorded at The Duke Of Wellington pub on various occasions from July 1999 to January 2000, in an attempt to get the songs right!
They were recorded direct from the soundboard to a cassette tape, (like, it would have killed me to rent a DAT machine!!), and were edited and compiled at home.
Andrew Horrocks of A.M.E. Recording Studio helped make these recordings sound passable, with the assistance of The Finalizer. Thanks D!
These performances do not represent the best of my solo live work, but they give a fairly honest impression of the sorts of music I play. Often times at these gigs, I am either not listened to, or I am too busy entertaining the people who ARE. The songs are pretty much in order of how I would do them at an average gig, which explains the de-generation of my voice towards the end of a gig. This could easily have been a 4 CD set, but I’m not a total moron!

Pop Nightmare - A Few Extra Comments!
You will notice that 2 of the songs on this album are songs of mine,
Salt Pony and Nepotism. I thought it might be cool to put a few new songs on the album, to make it more interesting.Salt Pony was written at least 6-8 years ago, but it never fit in with any OHD songs, so it was never recorded. It is very folky, and quite frankly pretty hard for me to play, since I am a pretty lousy finger-picker!
Nepotism was music I had written back when I wrote over 30 ideas for the Happy Hour album. This was one of the many incomplete ideas that never got worked on, until now. I wrote lyrics for it before last Christmas, and recorded all of the guitar parts last Monday (Feb 7th/2000)!! This is pretty much a total downer as a song, and because it is touching the 5 minute mark, I don't have room to include it on my "real" album, Songs Everyone Will Hate.
These two songs were recorded on my VS-840 Digital Recorder, but I kept the aesthetic similar to the live tracks, so they are both pretty much straight acoustic with voice, except for a few cool 12 string electric guitar parts on Nepotism!
The bonus tracks are from the last recorded gig that Andy and I did together as Tanner/Horrocks. I didn't realize that at the time, or I would have taped what turned out to be our last gig... a few weeks later, in April of 99'. On this gig that I was recording, we were both having an "off-night", so this is not a great example of what we sounded like. The drag is, on our next gig, we were great together, but
I didn't record that gig. It was on one of the breaks in that gig where Andy expressed his desire to not book anymore gigs as Tanner/Horrocks. It's a shame, because I would have loved to have recorded one last really good live tape... a similar feeling I have about One Hundred Days!However... the last two songs of the last recorded Tanner/Horrocks gig are at least quite funny, so hopefully you'll still find them worth listening to!
Anyway.. I hope those of you who asked about this project will find it interesting and enjoyable to listen to.
